The Legion of Mary was amongst those summoned by the new Bishop Nelson Perez, and included in the unmistakable Biblical feast in which all are called -- the great and the least. That it was set on the feast day of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was altogether relevant, for most remarkable was the balm in his words. His first words to the Cleveland Diocese were an act -- an encouraging sending (to spread God's saving Word) to a world in great need.
The Gospel reading was the calling of the disciples after the night spent catching no fish, of Jesus asking them to go out further to the deep water, of the amazing catch, and of Jesus' words not to be afraid to catch people. Bishop Perez joyfully assures, the Lord wants to work miracles and He is in the boat! And with conviction he advised we not be afraid to put out into the deep, that we live with enthusiasm, with confidence, with generous hearts, giving ourselves to being instruments in building the world of today. Confide et Spera (Trust and Hope) these words were his message; these are the words of Bishop Nelson Perez's shield.
He wonderfully does not hide, but proclaims his special devotion to our Blessed Mother. Legion of Mary, we couldn't all be there, but he was speaking to us all. He wanted and invited us (Mary's garment of flesh) to his first address. He promised us his prayers and asks for ours.
